remove.bg is shutting down: what changes in December 2026.

The product is not disappearing. The standalone destination is changing.

remove.bg says it became part of Canva in 2021 and is now migrating its background-removal functionality into the Canva platform. That is the important distinction for everyday users: background removal continues, but the place and surrounding workflow change.

The current remove.bg API documentation gives developers a separate destination. Starting December 1, 2026, background removal moves to Leonardo.Ai, which is also part of Canva. That is an API migration, not a promise that every existing integration will keep working unchanged.

The timing matters because the consumer site and the developer path should be treated as two different decisions. If you only remove a background occasionally, you need a simple image workflow. If your software calls an endpoint, you need to review authentication, request format, response format, storage and cost.

BEFORE THE DATE

Save the files you already paid to create.

remove.bg’s pricing notice says credits expire on December 1, 2026 at 9:00 AM CET. That includes pay-as-you-go credits, so do not assume an unused balance will remain available after the migration.

Make a short export pass before the deadline. Download the transparent PNGs you still need, keep the original images beside them, and record which files have already been used in a listing, presentation or campaign. The original is the recoverable source; the cutout is the finished asset.

THE DECISION

Choose based on the job, not the brand name.

Canva is the natural route if you want background removal inside a broader design workspace. Its own documentation describes a flow that moves from upload to background removal, further editing and a high-resolution PNG export.

Leonardo.Ai is the official direction for developers moving from the remove.bg API. Leonardo’s migration guide shows a different REST endpoint, Bearer authentication, JSON requests and a model named remove-bg. It is a real migration path, but it still needs engineering review.

A focused web remover is a different category. It makes sense when you want to isolate a subject and continue in another tool, without turning a one-image edit into a design project. There is no universal winner. The right replacement depends on whether the next step is layout, image production or simply download.
